Day 1: Laryngeal Surgery
- Diagnostic Microlaryngoscopy set up & endoscopic anatomy of the Larynx
- CO2 laser: science & safety
- Setting up CO2 laser: surgical pearls
- Surgical Management of Benign Laryngeal Pathology
- Vocal Cord Paralysis: Endoscopic and Transcervical injection augmentation of the vocal cord
- European Laryngology Association Classification of Laryngeal Laser Surgery
- Surgical Management of Subglottic Pathology
- Surgical Management of Laryngocele
- Arytenoid Granuloma: Challenges in management
- Surgery for Spasmodic Dysphonia
- Thyroplasty: Type 1
- Thyroplasty: Type 2
Day 2: Pharyngeal Surgery
- Endoscopic Anatomy and Clinical examination of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract
- Transnasal Esophagoscopy
- Transnasal Endoscopic Assessment of Swallowing and management of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia with endoscopic balloon dilatation
- Management of Pharyngeal Pouch: Endoscopic & External approach
- Endoscopic Management of Pharyngeal Pouch with CO2 laser
- Demonstration Endoscopic Stapling of Pharyngeal Pouch on Pig cadaver model
- (All participants will have facility to practice this on pig model)
- CO2 laser procedures for tongue base pathology
- Endoscopic (TNO) CO2 laser procedures with fibre delivery
- Management of Oesophageal Stricture through combined anterograde & retrograde endoscopic approach
- KTP Laser in animal model
- Blue laser in animal model
- Channel endoscopy

Course Directors:
Sam Majumdar
Sam Majumdar is a founding member of the British Laryngology Association and served on the council since 2013. He is a Laryngologist, full-time Consultant Surgeon and a Reader (hon) at the University of Dundee Medical School & Ninewells Hospital NHS Scotland. He is the lead clinician for Laryngology & voice, swallowing disorders (Transnasal Oesophagoscopy/Endoscopy) and difficult airway service at this centre, which he & his team had developed. He is leading the steering group for setting up the training and practicing standards for Transnasal Endoscopy/ Oesophagoscopy.
Sam Majumdar graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham Medical School after having substantial training in Maxillofacial surgery and obtaining Fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Sam Majumdar is passionate about teaching and training.
Sam Majumdar is a Fellow of the Scottish Patients Safety Programme delivered by the Health Improvement Scotland. He is also the Deputy Lead for Scotland for Quality Improvement (Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management). he has published widely in the medical literature and peer reviewed journals; presented the national and international academic and given invited & key notes speeches. He has published widely in the medical literature on all aspects of ENT surgery and is co-author of chapters on seminal textbooks. Jai Manik
Mr Jai Manick (Jaiganesh Manickavasagam) is the Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon in Ninewells Hospital and medical school Dundee. He is a Hon. Senior teacher of Dundee Medical School. He is the lead head and neck and thyroid surgeon with clinical interests in Laser surgery and endoscopic thyroid and parathyroid surgery. His clinical practice is devoted to benign and malignant diseases of the head and neck, including the mouth, throat, voice box, neck, salivary glands and the thyroid gland. He is one of few surgeons in the United Kingdom with expertise in Transoral Robotic Surgery and Transoral Laser Microsurgery for head and neck cancers. His research portfolio is primarily comprised of projects in head and neck, rhinology and skull base. He is also funder organiser of Dundee FRCS ENT VIVA course (www.frcsentvivacourse.co.uk) He is closely associated with ENTMASTERCLASS(www.entmasterclass.com) which is novel teaching platform for otolaryngology training and teaching. He is also editor of Head and neck section in Surgtech(www.surgtech.net)He is very keen on innovation, published and designed few new surgical techniques and new devices respectively.
Course Faculty:
Mr Richard Steven
Richard Steven is an ENT consultant and laryngologist in Fife, Scotland. Having completed a laryngology fellowship in Liverpool and Manchester he has returned to the east of Scotland where he undertook his specialty training. He has a particular interest in voice and airway disorders as well as in education. In 2018 he was awarded an MD for his work on the otolaryngology curriculum.
Shiying Hey
Shiying Hey completed her higher surgical ENT training in the East of Scotland deanery at Edinburgh, Dundee and Inverness. She is currently undertaking a post-CCT Laryngology fellowship accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London. With her strong commitment to teaching and training, Ms Hey holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education and is a member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the RCS Edinburgh. She enjoys being a faculty member at various national surgical courses with the latest, at the London TNO and Phonosurgery course. She has a passion for all aspects of Laryngology including airway, voice and swallowing.
Nashreen Oozeer
Nashreen is a graduate of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. She completed her basic surgical training in the North East Deanery and her higher surgical training in the West of Scotland. After her post-CCT H&N fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand (2014-15), she did a TORS observership with Professor Weinstein in Pennsylvania, USA. She has been a Head and Neck Consultant Surgeon at South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation NHS Trust since 2015. She has set up the Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery programme in her H&N unit in January 2016. She has been the H&N MDT chair and Trust H&N lead (2017-2021).She is an active member of the RCSEd Otolaryngology SSB (since 2020). She is the H&N representative on the multidisciplinary Robotic Committee (since 2021) and a contributor on the RCSEd publication 'Development of new robotic surgical services: a guide to good practice' 2022. She takes an active role in medical student teaching from both the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and the University of Sunderland. She runs local courses for staff development including the Laryngectomy/Tracheostomy Emergency management workshop and the Theatre multidisciplinary airway management workshop. She is Faculty at the regional H&N training days as well as the national H&N training courses at the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre. She is Faculty on the national gastroenterology Trans-Nasal Endoscopy course since 2016. She is Faculty on the ENT Masterclass emergency course since 2018. She is the Patient Information Lead for ENTUK since 2021 and is passionate at making jargon-free high quality well illustrated information accessible to patients from all walks of life.
